I just want to write about memories. Delightful, happy, treasured memories. A year ago right now,
my best friend, Katie, and I were preparing for our much-anticipated Europe trip. Our flights were booked, lodging reserved, and our very (VERY) vague plan was outlined. We had the basics ready, but for the rest of it, spontaneity was the best plan we had. It was wonderful. We drove the 9 hours south to Denver and the next day, we boarded our plane to then fly about another 9 hours to the other side of the world. We arrived in Paris hungry and exhausted (we bought extremely cheap tickets so no food was provided and sleeping was next to impossible). We eventually found our way to our first airbnb, which was a room roughly the size of a walk-in closet and was on the top floor of a tall building, so we got a work out climbing the stairs to eventually crash onto the tiny mattresses on the floor. We were quite glad to only have backpacks, I’m not sure I could’ve lugged a suitcase up all those flights… After an extensive nap, we finally headed out into the streets of Paris. The metro was dreadfully confusing that first time around, but we finally figured it out (only one mistake made-- one mistake that cost us 2 hours, but it was an adventure!). We finally made it to our destination and enjoyed the most delicious pizza I’ve ever tasted while sitting in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower. It glistened and dazzled with its dancing lights in the dark sky and it was easy to see why Paris is considered rather magical. The following morning, we found the most darling little cafe and enjoyed cappuccinos and pastries while sitting outside on a quiet side street. We then headed to Notre Dame-- I could’ve spent hours in silence while exploring that breathtaking cathedral. Crepes were our next stop. Crepes are one of my favorite foods and I’ve wanted to eat crepes in France for as long as I can remember. I wasn’t even a little bit disappointed. Then off to the Louvre! Katie and I got lost (very literally) but had the most pleasant time wandering the different areas of sculpture, art, and culture. And, like any best friends would, took turns picking out each other’s sarcophogi in the Egyptian section. Our last morning in Paris was spent wandering the streets, eating chocolate-filled croissants in the Luxembourg Garden, and walking along the River Seine before heading up to Beauvais to prepare for the next part of our adventure: Italy! I daydream about returning to Paris often and imagine strolling along the cobblestone streets with curtains billowing out the open windows above, the sun shining overhead in the pale blue sky, and everything wrapped in a soft hue of cotton-candy colors. Needless to say, I was positively enchanted by Paris.
